STEEL
Growing up die hard rap fans, (in 2016) my friend Duncan and I stepped outside of our comfort zone and took on the task of creating a concept rap album as the fictious characters of Don Queso (Duncan) and Tomato Jonez (myself) who took on Italian mafioso personas (see below for visuals). MF Doom heavily influenced us from a conceptual and sampling style piece, but the sound itself was also inspired by Scarface, the LOX, UGK, Roc Marciano, Mannie Fresh production, Project Pat (to name a few).
After a year of work, Duncan and I ultimately chickened out. Typically, when guys like Duncan or myself start talking about beginning a rap career, people get concerned and wonder if we are dealing with a mental illness. However, if we had insisted on pursuing this and began promoting the fact that we weren't rapping as ourselves but as a tomato and a piece of cheese, people would be certain we had lost our minds. We just weren't brave enough to promote this project at all.
